Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis interrupts Soccer Aid

Unlike his usual warnings about switching bank accounts or getting financial help, Martin’s interruption was to ensure that people made the most of their donations. He urged the public to donate to UNICEF and to ‘say yes to Gift Aid’.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a scheme that allows charities to claim an extra 25p for every £1 donated. When you donate to charity, 20% of the tax is usually taken off. However, with Gift Aid, the charity gets the full amount, and you can claim further tax back.

How Does it Work?

Martin explained that if you’re a higher 40% rate taxpayer, UNICEF still gets the 25% boost, but you can claim some further tax back, which you could then donate too. This means that a £20 donation becomes £25 at no extra cost to you.

The star-studded line-up included cricket legend Stuart Broad, I’m A Celebrity’s Sam Thompson, Strictly Come Dancing’s Bobby Brazier, and former EastEnders actor Danny Dyer.

Make the Most of Your Donations

Martin’s important message serves as a reminder to make the most of our donations. By saying yes to Gift Aid, we can make a bigger impact on the charities we support. So, the next time you donate, don’t forget to tick that Gift Aid box!
