How to Save Money in the Garden: My Top Tips
As a keen gardener, I’m always on the lookout for ways to save money without compromising on the beauty and functionality of my outdoor space. After all, who doesn’t love the idea of creating a stunning garden without breaking the bank?
Save money, grow your own
One of the most effective ways to save money in the garden is to propagate your own plants. Not only does this reduce waste, but it also means you can create new plants for free. I’ve found that lavenders, hydrangeas, and hostas are all great options for propagation.
Take Lavender Cuttings
Lavender is one of my favorite plants to propagate. Not only does it smell amazing, but it’s also incredibly easy to grow from cuttings. Simply take a stem from a mature lavender plant, reduce the foliage on the bottom half, and pop it into a pot of compost. Water well, and you’ll have a brand new plant in no time.

Divide Hostas
Mature hostas can be divided to create up to 10 new plants. Simply take the plant, cut the root ball with a spade, and repot into peat-free compost. Water well, and you’ll have a whole new batch of hostas in no time.
Propagate Hydrangeas
Hydrangeas are another great option for propagation. Simply take a 12cm stem from a mature hydrangea, reduce the foliage, and pop it into a pot of compost mixed with a little bit of grit for drainage. Water well, and you’ll have a brand new hydrangea in no time.
Use Clever Containers
Get creative with your containers! Look around your home for items that can be repurposed as planters. Old pots, wheelbarrows, and even children’s toys can make for unique and quirky containers.
Reuse and Repurpose
Reuse and recycle materials as much as possible. Loo rolls can be used to grow sweet peas, and fruit boxes can be used as seed trays. The possibilities are endless!
DIY Mulch
After mowing the lawn, keep the grass cuttings to use as mulch. Simply spread a thin layer on your borders, and you’ll help retain moisture and improve soil conditions over time.
