Navigating Your Adult Disability Payment Consultation: What to Expect and How to Prepare

What to Expect from Your Adult Disability Payment Consultation

As of January, a staggering 192,575 people are in receipt of Adult Disability Payment (ADP), with 83,199 new applicants and 109,385 existing Personal Independence Payment (PIP) case transfers from the Department for Work Pensions (DWP). While the average time to process a new claim for ADP has fallen from 83 working days in October 2023 to 59 working days in January 2024, some people making a claim may still have to attend a consultation before a decision can be made.

“I was nervous about my consultation, but being prepared made all the difference.” - Rachel, ADP recipient

During the consultation, Social Security Scotland will discuss how your condition or disability affects you, and may also discuss some points you have already mentioned in your application form. It’s essential to prepare for your consultation, as Social Security Scotland will use the information to help them make a decision on your application.

Preparing for your consultation

To make the most of your consultation, focus on the following:

  • What is difficult for you to do
  • If there’s anything you’re not able to do
  • How your condition affects you on a daily basis
  • Your worst days and how those affect you

Highlighting your daily struggles

Remember, the consultation is an opportunity to provide more information and clarify any points that may be unclear. Be honest and open about your experiences, and don’t hesitate to ask questions.

Social Security Scotland is here to help

By being prepared and knowing what to expect, you can feel more confident and in control of your consultation. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, and remember that Social Security Scotland is there to support you throughout the process.
